My focus: neuroimmunology.

On a first scan they can be hard to tell apart. Getting it right matters, because some treatments that help one can make another worse.

Multiple sclerosis

A chronic immune attack on the myelin of the brain and spinal cord, with lesions spread out in space and time.

Oligoclonal bands · MRI lesions

NMOSD

An antibody against aquaporin 4 on astrocytes. Attacks favor the optic nerves and the spinal cord, and they can be severe.

AQP4-IgG

MOGAD

MOG antibody-associated disease

An antibody against myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein. Defined as its own disease by international criteria only in 2023.
